West Bengal

¶ Introduction

West Bengal is bounded on the north by Bhutan and the state of Sikkim, on the east by Bangladesh and the state of Assam, on the south by the Bay of Bengal, on the southwest by the state of Orissa, and on the west by Nepal and the state of Bihar. Its capital, Calcutta, is one of the largest cities in India.

A veritable land is the door to Eastern Indian States. The place is marked by is unique variety of topography, vegetations and fauna. The state consists of all places possible places to attract tourists. The topography ranges from high mountains of the Eastern Himalayan range and the beaches in the southern fringe.

The panoramic hill resort of Darjeeling can be reached by the romantic toy train along the dense forest stretches of Terai, amidst the tea plantations situated in the foothills. The reminiscences of the colonial impression are still imprinted all over the place.

Dooars , the veritable gateway of the state to the North Eastern part of the country is famous for its Tea and Timber.

As one moves towards the southern part of the state, the remains of the art and architecture of the Muslim rulers of medieval Bengal can be found scattered in Gaur and Pandua region of modern Malda district, the other such impressions can be seen at Lalbagh Murshidabad District.

The famous temples made from the terracotta (burnt brick) becomes a part of the architecture of the temples of Bengal, which can be found in all the corners of the district of Birbhum, Bankura and Nadia.

The famous university at Shantiniketan is the home of cultural diversity of the state.

The world famous bio-reserve, Sunderbans , the home of Royal Bengal tiger also forms a part of major attraction f the state. Kolkata the capital of West Bengal is the life ware of the state with every charm of confluence of Colonial and Modern life.
